When the majority of Imperial students think of Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus brimming with creatures and flora that are seldom found at other sites like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An Overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and hosting habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and sprawling grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations globally within an online community of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. A further inquiry on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have already been documented on the grounds.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Silwood Park is known for being the venue for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two prominent studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us participate in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 taking care of chickens kept behind our residences<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 frequently discussing literature from their reading list<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being part of the wider Imperial student community, many of us are also members of clubs based in South Kensington and actively engage in their activities!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities located in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates such events, ensuring a lively and dynamic student experience! In the last few months, we’ve held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, as well as our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone gathered to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized gatherings celebrating global events (like Carnival) or parties thrown simply for the joy of celebration.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It’s a part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers must organize the next one, and I can proudly say I have set the most pub quizzes this year. Although I\u2019ve lost many pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, it\u2019s always a blast with good friends and a quality pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt ordinary or insufficient. Beyond the multitude of events and activities, we foster a friendly and inviting community composed of students from across the globe. We all share a love for nature, appreciate our stunning campus, and, more importantly, cherish one another\u2019s company.
