When numerous Imperial students visualize Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, intriguing, and green campus brimming with wildlife and vegetation not typically seen at other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they\u2019re right \u2013 every image imagined of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I\u2019d like to bring attention to the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Presenting Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park functions as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open meadows. A quick look on iNaturalist, an app for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations globally among a network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been noted on campus. Furthermore, a check on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been identified on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is also home to various long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, which are among the more prominent studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly hosts postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution studies. Many of us engage in several clubs based at Silwood Park. Key examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 caretakers of the chickens reared behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regular meetings to discuss books of interest from their reading list<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseers of the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 planners of nature walks and conservation initiatives for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us also get involved in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have groups participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either at the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, many community-led events take place on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these events to maintain a vibrant and exciting student life! Recently, we had the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the start of the year, where everyone came together to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also had community-organized gatherings celebrating global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of parties.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s a tradition at Silwood that the losers of the pub quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly state that I\u2019ve set the most pub quizzes this year. Despite losing many pub quizzes due to my sparse general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyable times to be had with great company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Abode Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never been dull or devoid of excitement. Beyond the multitude of events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community made up of students from across the globe. We all share a love for nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, each other\u2019s companionship. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that enjoys stargazing in the winter chill on the open field next to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our room windows, and spending time<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
