When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, intriguing, and green campus bustling with wildlife and flora seldom found at other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In numerous aspects, they are accurate \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice of this lesser-known community at Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research center, covering 77 hectares and showcasing ecosystems like freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open grass areas. A straightforward search on iNaturalist, an application for charting and sharing biodiversity observations globally with an online network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and a additional search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been accounted for thus far.<\/p>\n

More intriguingly, Silwood Park hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experiences at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus predominantly accommodates postgraduate scholars keen on projects that involve ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are members of various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 who care for the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who meet regularly to discuss intriguing literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 who oversee the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 who coordinate nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us are also members and actively engage in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we boast clubs that partake in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), whether on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports halls in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and lessons, we have numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates such activities to ensure a lively and engaging student life! In recent months, we\u2019ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community united to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also had our annual Chinese New Year celebration earlier this year, where everyone made dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Additionally, we\u2019ve organized community parties celebrating events from around the globe (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of celebrating.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus event, however, must be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that the losing team from the pub quiz must organize the next one, and I can proudly claim the title for the highest number of pub quizzes arranged this year. Despite losing several pub quizzes due to my lackluster general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment to be found in great company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the energetic atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed monotonous or insufficient. Beyond a plethora of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inviting community made up of students from around the globe. All of us appreciate nature, cherish our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, value one another.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
