For many Imperial students, Silwood Park conjures images of a verdant, enigmatic campus brimming with wildlife and flora not typically found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In several respects, they are right \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, encompassing 77 hectares and showcasing environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide within an online community of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while an additional search on eBird indicates that 111 species of birds have been documented thus far.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Silwood Park is also the location for numerous long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, which are among the more prominent studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us belong to various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 dedicated to caring for the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 that meets regularly to discuss titles of interest on their reading list<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 responsible for maintaining the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 which organizes nature walks and environmentally-focused activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us are also involved and actively participate in clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have groups that partake in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities located in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that plans and facilitates such activities to ensure a rich and engaging student life! In recent months, we organized the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community came together to share languages and cultures over a few weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone gathered to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also celebrated community-organized parties marking events from around the globe (like Carnival), or simply thrown parties for the sheer joy of it.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event must be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the quiz losers must host the next one, and I can boldly assert that I have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite my lack of general trivia knowledge leading to numerous losses, there\u2019s always great fun to be had with comrades and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively essence of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or lacking. Along with the plethora of events and activities, we have a warm and inviting community made up of students from around the globe. We all share a passion for nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
