When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they visualize a verdant, enigmatic, and thriving campus bustling with wildlife and flora rarely encountered at our other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they’re correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known faction at Imperial, I’d like to showcase the student experience, activities, and community that thrive within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research station, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and open pastures. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations with a global network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been identified on campus, and further exploration on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been recorded to date.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is also the location of numerous long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, which are among the more recognized studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are active in various clubs that are based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for caring for the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who convene regularly to discuss noteworthy titles on their reading agenda<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 who oversee the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 who organize nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the wider Imperial student body, many of us also belong to and actively engage in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have clubs involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which utilize either the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or the indoor sports facilities situated in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, there are many community-led events held on campus. Silwood Park features its student council that organizes and supports such events to ensure we enjoy a vibrant and thrilling student life! In recent months, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community united to share languages and cultures over several weeks, as well as our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone gathered to prepare dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. Community-organized parties have also celebrated events from around the world (like Carnival), or simply celebrated for the joy of hosting parties.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz organized by our student community. It\u2019s a part of Silwood culture that the losers of the pub quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly state I have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Although I\u2019ve lost quite a few pub quizzes due to my lack of general knowledge, there’s always delightful fun to be had with great company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n
