When students from Imperial think of Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, enigmatic, and green campus bustling with distinct animals and plants, quite different from those found at South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known Imperial community, I wish to shed light on student life, activities, and the community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park acts as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and showcasing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open grasslands. Searching on iNaturalist, an app for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide, reveals 1,436 recorded species of flora, fauna, and fungi on campus. Moreover, eBird lists 111 bird species documented on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research projects, including Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, two prominent on-site initiatives.<\/p>\n

Campus Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students with interests in ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. We are part of various clubs based at Silwood Park, such as:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 caring for chickens raised behind our accommodation<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly discussing intriguing books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 tending to allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation activities for students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have sports clubs such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my favorite!), based either on the campus multi-use games arena (MUGA) or in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates activities to enrich student life. Recently, we conducted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, alongside our annual Chinese New Year celebration, making dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized parties celebrating global festivities (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gatherings.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that quiz losers organize the next one, and I proudly hold the record for the most quizzes set this year. Despite my poor general trivia knowledge leading to many losses, it\u2019s always enjoyable with great company and a pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Sanctuary Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from civilization (e.g., the train station and nearest village), life at Silwood Park is never dull. Alongside a multitude of events and activities, we share a warm, welcoming community of students from around the globe. We all cherish nature, our beautiful campus, and each other\u2019s companionship. We\u2019re a close-knit group who enjoys stargazing in the winter chill on the open field by our bar, observing birds and mammals visiting our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I cook with my dear friend from India who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. We are often joined by friends residing a short walk away in neighboring residence halls. After dinner, we play board games or watch movies together. Living on Silwood Park Campus truly represents a tranquil, serene, and picturesque life. In winter, this is complemented by the cozy warmth of heaters throughout our residence halls and campus buildings.<\/p>\n
