When students from Imperial imagine Silwood Park, they see a lush, mysterious, and green campus brimming with wildlife and plant life, distinct from other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are right \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

In my role as a representative of this lesser-known Imperial community, I seek to shine a light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Presenting Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park acts as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and open fields. A simple search on iNaturalist, an application used for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations among a global network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, eBird has logged 111 bird species observed on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is home to a variety of long-term field research initiatives, including the well-recognized Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project that are carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Life for Students at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus is predominantly populated by postgraduate students passionate about ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us engage in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some prominent examples are:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 looking after the chickens raised behind our accommodation<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly engaging in discussions about interesting books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the community garden plots<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and preservation activities for Silwood Park students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us also belong to clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have sports clubs featuring badminton, basketball, and pickleball (which happens to be my favorite!), operating either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, various community-driven events take place on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and supports these activities, fostering a lively and engaging student environment! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and we marked Chinese New Year with dumplings and couplets to celebrate the new lunar year. There have also been community-organized parties in honor of global festivities (such as Carnival) or simply for the joy of celebration.<\/p>\n

    My preferred campus event is the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the quiz participants who perform the worst set up the following quiz, and I can proudly say I have organized the most quizzes this year. Despite facing numerous defeats due to my limited general knowledge, the experience is always enjoyable with great company and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the energetic hub of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park is never dull or uninteresting. Beyond the multitude of events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community of students hailing from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, our beautiful campus surroundings, and, most importantly, each other\u2019s company. We are a tight-knit community that revels in winter stargazing on the open fields adjacent to our bar, observing birds and mammals that visit our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most nights, I cook alongside my close friend from India, who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. We are frequently joined by friends who live just a short walk away in nearby residence halls. After our meals, we often play board games or enjoy movies together.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
