When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a verdant, enchanting campus brimming with species of plants and animals seldom found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 each depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known faction within Imperial, I wish to shed light on the student experience, initiatives, and community at our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and showcasing environments like freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, a platform for documenting and sharing biodiversity experiences globally with a social network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, with eBird highlighting 111 bird species identified thus far.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Silwood Park hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project among the more recognized studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus is predominantly populated by postgraduate scholars interested in projects focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us belong to various clubs based at Silwood Park, including:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 which tends to the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 that meets regularly to discuss chosen readings<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 which oversees the allotments within our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 which arranges nature walks and environmentally-based activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, numerous members also engage in activities from clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we host clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), primarily taking place on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club meetings and classes, we organize several community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that coordinates and facilitates these happenings, guaranteeing a lively and engaging student life! In recent times, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international group united to share our languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, during which everyone collaborated to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also seen community-organized festivities celebrating global events (like Carnival), or parties held simply for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite event on campus has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s an unwritten rule of Silwood culture that those who lose the pub quiz must organize the next one, and I can shamelessly boast about having set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Even with my numerous losses at various pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment to be had with good friends and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Though situated a 30-minute stroll from the dynamic atmosphere of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never been dull or lacking. In addition to the multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inclusive community consisting of students from diverse backgrounds.
