When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, enigmatic campus filled with wildlife and plants that aren\u2019t typically found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A glimpse into Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s field laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open fields. A quick search on iNaturalist, a platform for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide within an online community of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been noted on campus, while an additional search on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been recorded to date.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also the venue for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two prominent studies carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students keen on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us belong to various clubs rooted in Silwood Park. Some key examples are:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for caring for the chickens raised behind our residences<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 that meets regularly to talk about interesting books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 who oversee the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 that organizes nature excursions and conservation-focused activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being part of the broader Imperial student body, numerous members also engage in activities from clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), played either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in neighboring towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Beyond club activities and classes, we host many community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates such events to guarantee a lively and exciting student experience! In recent times, we\u2019ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the year\u2019s start, where everyone crafted dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also had community-hosted parties celebrating global events (such as Carnival) or simply celebrating the joy of gatherings.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event remains the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the quiz losers must prepare the next one, and I can proudly claim the highest count of pub quizzes organized this year. Despite losing countless pub quizzes due to my lacking general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always a great time to be had in good company with a decent pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the bustling activities of civilization (like the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or lacking. Alongside the myriad of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inviting community filled with students from various corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, appreciate our stunning campus, and more significantly, value each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a close-knit community that takes delight in spending time together.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
