When most Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus bustling with species of plants and animals seldom found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are spot on \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this less-familiar community at Imperial, I want to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for recording and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide within an online community of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and a further search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified to date.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also the location of numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more renowned projects carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students engaged in projects focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us are involved in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for the welfare of the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who frequently convene to discuss interesting literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments within our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 who arrange nature walks and conservation-related events for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in activities of clubs located in South Kensington as well!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we also have groups that participate in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host plenty of community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates such activities to ensure a lively and enjoyable student experience! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, which brought together our largely international community to share languages and cultures over several weeks, as well as our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone prepared dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also had community-arranged parties celebrating diverse events from around the globe (like Carnival) or gatherings solely for the pleasure of socializing.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, hosted by our student community. It\u2019s become a Silwood tradition that the quiz losers organize the next one, and I can confidently assert that I hold the record for the most quizzes set this year. Even with my frequent losses due to my limited trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always a great time to be had with excellent company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Although it is a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never been dull or insufficient. In addition to the multitude of events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community of students from around the globe. We all cherish nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and most importantly, enjoy each other\u2019s company.
