In numerous ways, they are spot on – every depiction of Silwood Park is indeed true!

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I aim to showcase the student experience, events, and community found in our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.

A glimpse of Silwood Park

Silwood Park functions as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring environments such as freshwater streams, ponds, an “ancient” forest, and open fields. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with an online community of naturalists, uncovers that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Additional investigation on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus thus far.

What’s more, Silwood Park is home to a variety of long-term field research initiatives, including the well-known Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, both conducted on-site.

Student life at Silwood Park

The campus mainly serves postgraduate students focused on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us engage in several clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable ones include:

Chicken Club – tending to the chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – meeting regularly to discuss interesting titles on their reading lists

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments in our shared garden

Conservation Club – organizing nature walks and conservation activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also join and actively participate in clubs located in South Kensington!

Informally, we also have clubs that engage in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either in the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates such initiatives to foster a lively and dynamic student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community gathered to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, making dumplings and couplets to ring in the new lunar year. We have also had community-organized gatherings to celebrate global events (like Carnival) or purely for the joy of festivities.

However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s become a Silwood tradition that the team with the lowest score must host the next quiz, and I can proudly claim to have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite missing several pub quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, it’s always a good time with great company and a refreshing pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my home away from home

Even though it’s a 30-minute trek from the lively atmosphere of nearby civilization (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or lacking. Beyond the many events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community made up of students from around the globe. We all appreciate nature, treasure our beautiful campus grounds, and, more importantly, relish each other’s company. We’re a close-knit community that enjoys stargazing.

Written by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, mysterious, and green campus filled with wildlife and vegetation rarely seen at other locales like South Kensington or White City.
