In numerous respects, they are correct – every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As a member of this lesser-known faction within Imperial, I wish to shine a light on the student experience, engagements, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

A glimpse into Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity insights worldwide among a digital network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while a subsequent inquiry on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus to date.

Moreover, Silwood Park is the venue for a multitude of longstanding field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized efforts undertaken on-site.

Student life at Silwood Park

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are members of various clubs headquartered at Silwood Park. Prominent examples include:

Chicken Club – responsible for the care of chickens kept behind our residence halls

Book Club – who meet regularly to engage in discussions about their reading selections

Gardening Club – who oversee the plots in our community garden

Conservation Club – who organize nature excursions and conservation-themed events for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, numerous individuals among us are also active members and regularly engage in the activities of clubs based in South Kensington as well!

Informally, we have gatherings centered around sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities found in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and coursework, we host a variety of community-driven events that take place on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and supports such events to guarantee a lively and dynamic student experience! In recent months, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community united to share our languages and cultures over several weeks, as well as our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the year’s start, where everyone collaborated to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also celebrated community-driven parties honoring traditions from around the globe (like Carnival), or parties organized simply for the joy of celebration.

However, my personal favorite event on campus must be the weekly pub quiz, orchestrated by our student community. It’s a tradition at Silwood that the participants who lose the pub quiz are tasked with organizing the subsequent one, and I can proudly assert that I hold the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Despite my frequent losses in pub quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there’s always delightful fun to be had in great company over a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Although situated a 30-minute stroll from the lively atmosphere of the nearest civilization (for instance, the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt ordinary or lacking. In addition to the multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and hospitable community comprised

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When many students at Imperial consider Silwood Park, they visualize a verdant, enigmatic campus rich with flora and fauna that aren’t typically found at our other locations, such as South Kensington or White City.
