When the majority of Imperial students think of Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus bustling with wildlife and foliage seldom seen on other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park is accurate!<\/p>\n

As a spokesperson for this lesser-known community within Imperial, I would like to showcase the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A glimpse into Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, encompassing 77 hectares and showcasing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A swift search on iNaturalist, an app for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide among a network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, with an additional inquiry on eBird revealing 111 bird species documented thus far.<\/p>\n

Remarkably, Silwood Park also hosts a variety of long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, two prominent studies conducted on the premises.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily caters to postgraduate students drawn to ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Many of us engage in several clubs positioned at Silwood Park. Significant examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to chickens raised behind our dormitories<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 frequently discussing engaging literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 managing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation efforts for Silwood Park students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As a part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also take part in the activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs involved in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), based either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we have numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park features its own student council that plans and facilitates such activities to ensure a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, and our yearly Chinese New Year celebration, making dumplings and couplets to welcome the lunar new year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized parties celebrating global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gatherings.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s ingrained in Silwood culture that the quiz losers arrange the next one, and I can proudly declare the highest number of quizzes set this year. Despite failing numerous quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment in good company and a fine pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my sanctuary away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the vibrant activities of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or insufficient. Alongside countless events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community of students from across the globe. We all share a passion for nature, our stunning campus grounds, and most importantly, each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a tight-knit community relishing in stargazing during the winter chill on the open field adjacent to our bar, observing birds and mammals at our window, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I cook with my cherished friend from India, who shares my enthusiasm for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. We\u2019re often accompanied by friends residing a short walk away in the surrounding neighborhoods.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
