When students from Imperial reflect on Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enchanting, and green campus bustling with distinctive wildlife and flora, setting it apart from South Kensington or White City. In many aspects, they\u2019re correct\u2014every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known Imperial community, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and camaraderie within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for mapping and sharing observations of global biodiversity, uncovers 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi recorded on campus. Moreover, eBird indicates 111 bird species documented here.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, both of which are well-known site-specific endeavors.<\/p>\n

Student Experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students who are passionate about ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. We\u2019re engaged in several clubs based at Silwood Park, such as:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 taking care of chickens behind our dormitories<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 frequently discussing books of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing community garden plots<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature walks and conservation events for Silwood Park students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also join clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have sports organizations such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my favorite!), hosted at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities within nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and courses, we host many community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park\u2019s student council organizes and supports these initiatives, maintaining a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we enjoyed the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration, making dumplings and couplets to greet the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also hosted community-organized events celebrating global occasions (like Carnival) or simply enjoying the festivities.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood tradition that the quiz losers prepare the next one, and I can proudly assert that I\u2019ve set the most pub quizzes this year. Despite often losing pub quizzes due to my limited trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment with good company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and nearest village), the experience at Silwood Park is never dull or unfulfilling. Alongside various events and activities, we have a friendly, inviting community of students from diverse backgrounds. Our shared love for nature, the stunning beauty of our campus grounds, and, importantly, each other’s companionship unites us. We form a close-knit community relishing stargazing in the chilly winter on the open field adjacent to our bar, observing birds and mammals visit our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I cook with my dear Indian friend, who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. We\u2019re often joined by friends who reside just a short walk away in neighboring dorms. After dinner, we typically engage in board games or enjoy movies together.
