When numerous Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus bustling with wildlife and vegetation rarely found at other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In many aspects, they are right\u2014each representation of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a spokesperson for this lesser-known community at Imperial, I wish to showcase the student life, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s ecological laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A swift inquiry on iNaturalist, an application designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations with a global network of naturalists, uncovers that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, a check on eBird indicates that 111 species of birds have been documented on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also the location for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two prominent studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students focused on projects in ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us engage in several clubs based at Silwood Park. Prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens raised behind our residences<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly deliberating on books of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation projects for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As participants in the broader Imperial student body, many of us also join in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we feature clubs that engage in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports halls in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we have many community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park is home to its own student council that organizes and facilitates such gatherings, fostering a lively and dynamic student atmosphere! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultures over a few weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration, featuring dumpling making and couplet crafting to greet the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized parties celebrating various global festivities (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of socializing.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, hosted by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the teams who lose the pub quiz arrange the following one, and I can confidently assert that I have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment with wonderful company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the vibrant energy of civilization (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed monotonous or deficient. Alongside the multitude of events and activities, we share a friendly and inviting community of students from around the globe. We all appreciate nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, more critically, each other\u2019s companionship. We are a close community that relishes stargazing in the winter chill on the open field adjacent to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our window, and enjoying the company of fellow nature aficionados.<\/p>\n
