In many ways, they are spot on – every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As a voice for this lesser-known Imperial community, I wish to shine a light on the student experience, activities, and camaraderie found at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

Discovering Silwood Park

Silwood Park acts as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares with environments including freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide among naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been noted on campus. Moreover, a search on eBird has revealed that 111 species of birds have been recorded on campus thus far.

Notably, Silwood Park also hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, which are two of the more recognized endeavors carried out on-site.

Life as a Student at Silwood Park

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students with interests in ecology, conservation, and evolutionary research. Many of us are active in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some standout examples include:

Chicken Club – tending to the chickens raised behind our residential halls

Book Club – regularly convening to discuss engaging books

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments within our community garden

Conservation Club – coordinating nature walks and conservation initiatives for students at Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, a number of us also engage in activities organized by clubs based in South Kensington!

Casually, there are clubs participating in various sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), taking place either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities located in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Apart from club activities and lectures, we host a plethora of community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities, contributing to a vibrant and exciting student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared their languages and cultures over the course of several weeks, as well as our annual Chinese New Year celebration, during which everyone made dumplings and couplets to greet the new lunar year. We’ve also enjoyed community-organized parties, celebrating global occasions (like Carnival) or simply the joy of gatherings.

My favorite campus activity is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s ingrained in Silwood culture that the losing team of the pub quiz must arrange the next one, and I can proudly say I hold the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Despite frequently coming in last due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there’s always plenty of enjoyment to be had in good company with a fine pint of beer.

Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home

Though just a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (for instance, the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never been dull or unremarkable. In addition to the myriad events and activities, we boast a warm and inviting community made up of students from around the globe. We all cherish nature, admire our gorgeous campus grounds, and, importantly, savor each other’s company. We are a close-knit group that relishes stargazing in the chilly winter on the open field beside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our room windows, and enjoying time with fellow nature enthusiasts.

Written by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When many students from Imperial envision Silwood Park, they picture a lush, enigmatic, and green campus rich in wildlife and plant life rarely encountered at other locations such as South Kensington or White City.
