In numerous respects, they’re correct – every impression formed of Silwood Park holds true!

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I want to showcase the student experience, events, and community within our nature-filled parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

An overview of Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and open grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations globally within a network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, with a further search on eBird indicating that 111 bird species have been documented thus far.

Moreover, Silwood Park hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more notable endeavors carried out on-site.

Student experiences at Silwood Park

The campus predominantly houses postgraduate students passionate about projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us participate in several clubs associated with Silwood Park. Some prominent examples include:

Chicken Club – responsible for the care of the chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – who meet regularly to discuss focusing on their reading list

Gardening Club – in charge of managing the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – who arrange nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students on the Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us are also members and actively take part in activities hosted by clubs based in South Kensington!

Casually, we also have groups that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which are held either in the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities located in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Alongside club activities and classes, we host many community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these events to foster a vibrant and engaging student experience! In recent months, we had the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community came together to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, where everyone congregated to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome in the new lunar year. We’ve also hosted community-organized parties commemorating various global celebrations (like Carnival) or parties simply thrown for the enjoyment of festivities.

However, my favorite campus occasion must be the weekly pub quiz, orchestrated by our student community. It’s a part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers must organize the next one, and I can confidently claim the title for the most quizzes set this year. Despite losing at many pub quizzes due to my limited grasp of general trivia, there’s always great enjoyment to be found with excellent company and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt boring or insufficient. Beyond the many events and activities, we benefit from a friendly and inclusive community made up of students from all corners of the globe.

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When most Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, enchanting, and green campus bustling with wildlife and plants seldom found at other locations like South Kensington or White City.
