When the majority of Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus brimming with wildlife and flora that are seldom found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are spot on \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park is indeed accurate!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I would like to shed light on the student experience, activities, and camaraderie present at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park functions as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, encompassing 77 hectares and including habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A quick inquiry on iNaturalist, an app utilized for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations globally within a community of naturalists, uncovers that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on-site thus far.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also home to a variety of long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more prominent studies conducted here.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students with interests in ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many among us actively take part in various clubs based out of Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 caring for the chickens raised behind our residential halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 convening regularly to discuss books of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature walks and conservation activities for students within Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in activities with clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs involving sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either at the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Aside from club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities, ensuring a lively and dynamic student life! Recently, we have hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks. We also celebrated Chinese New Year earlier this year, making dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. There have also been community-organized festivities to celebrate global events (such as Carnival) or simply to enjoy each other\u2019s company.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz organized by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood tradition that the losing team of the pub quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly claim to have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite frequently losing due to my limited general knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment to be found in the company of friends and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively atmosphere of civilization (for instance, the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or lacking. Alongside the myriad of events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community consisting of students from all corners of the globe. We all share a passion for nature, cherish our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, enjoy each other\u2019s companionship. We form a tight-knit community that relishes stargazing in the chilly winters in the open field adjacent to our pub, observing the various birds and mammals that visit our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
