In many ways, they are right – every vision of Silwood Park that springs to mind is true!

As a member of this lesser-known segment at Imperial, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

Welcome to Silwood Park

Silwood Park functions as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and comprising environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide within a network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, an inquiry on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been noted on campus so far.

More fascinatingly, Silwood Park is home to various long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized studies carried out here.

Life as a Student at Silwood Park

The campus mainly hosts postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Many of us are engaged in a variety of clubs located at Silwood Park. Some noteworthy examples include:

Chicken Club – taking care of the chickens kept behind our residence halls

Book Club – meeting regularly to discuss captivating literature

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – conducting nature walks and conservation efforts for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also take part in activities organized by clubs in South Kensington!

Casually, we have clubs participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), based either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) at our campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and classes, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these events to ensure an engaging and vibrant student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, and we celebrated our annual Chinese New Year event at the start of the year, where everyone gathered to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also had community-organized celebrations for global festivities (like Carnival) or simply out of a love for gatherings.

My favorite event on campus, however, is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s a part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers must host the next one, and I can proudly state that I have set the highest number of quizzes this year. Even though I’ve lost many quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there’s always great entertainment with good friends and a nice pint of beer.

Silwood Park: My Second Home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively buzz of civilization (for instance, the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or empty. Beyond the many events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inclusive community composed of students from all over the globe. We all adore nature, appreciate our stunning campus surroundings, and, most significantly, value each other’s company. We’re a tight-knit community that enjoys stargazing in the winter chill in the open field next to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our room windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.

Written by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a lush, enigmatic, and green campus bustling with wildlife and plant life seldom encountered at other campuses like South Kensington or White City.
