In many ways, they are absolutely right—every vision of Silwood Park is indeed true!

As a member of this lesser-known Imperial community, I hope to illuminate the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

Welcome to Silwood Park

Silwood Park acts as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and showcasing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and open fields. A quick look on iNaturalist, an app for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations globally with a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, a search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus to date.

More fascinatingly, Silwood Park hosts several long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the most notable studies conducted on-site.

Student Life at Silwood Park

The campus mainly caters to postgraduate students with interests in ecology, conservation, and evolution initiatives. The majority of us participate in various clubs located at Silwood Park. Prominent examples include:

Chicken Club – looking after the chickens raised behind our dormitories

Book Club – frequently gathering to discuss interesting reads

Gardening Club – tending to the plots in our community garden

Conservation Club – coordinating nature hikes and conservation endeavors for students at Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us are also members and actively join in the events of clubs based in South Kensington!

Informally, we have clubs that engage in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and classes, many community-led events take place on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and manages these activities, ensuring a lively and thrilling student life! Recently, we’ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and we welcomed the lunar new year by making dumplings and couplets. We’ve also enjoyed community-organized celebrations for global festivities (like Carnival) or just to celebrate the joy of parties.

My preferred campus event, however, is the weekly pub quiz arranged by our student community. It’s a part of Silwood culture that the pub quiz losers must host the following one, and I can proudly say that I have set the most pub quizzes this year. Even though I have lost many quizzes due to insufficient general knowledge, there’s always a great time to be had with wonderful friends and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the bustling energy of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has always been exciting and fulfilling. Beyond the many events and activities, we share a friendly and inclusive community made up of students from across the globe. We all cherish nature, appreciate our stunning campus space, and, most significantly, enjoy each other’s company. We’re a close community that revels in stargazing during the winter chill on the open field next to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that grace our surroundings.

Written by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a lush, enchanting, and green campus brimming with wildlife and plant life that isn’t often found at other campuses like South Kensington or White City.
