In many ways, they are accurate – every image imagined of Silwood Park holds truth!

As a member of this lesser-known segment at Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community present at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

Presenting Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems including freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and open grasslands. A brief search on iNaturalist, an app allowing you to chart and share biodiversity findings globally with a network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and an additional exploration on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been noted on campus thus far.

Additionally, Silwood Park hosts a variety of long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more prominent studies carried out on-site.

Student Experience at Silwood Park

The campus mainly caters to postgraduate students focused on projects relating to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many among us are involved in various clubs at Silwood Park. Some noteworthy examples include:

Chicken Club – dedicated to the care of the chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – who meet regularly to discuss books from their reading lists

Gardening Club – responsible for managing the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – organizes nature walks and conservation-focused activities for students on the Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in events held by clubs in South Kensington!

Casually, we have clubs participating in sports activities like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), located either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and classes, there are many community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and supports such activities to maintain a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we initiated the Silwood language exchange, where our diverse international community mingled to exchange languages and cultural experiences over several weeks. We also marked our annual Chinese New Year at the start of the year, with everyone coming together to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Moreover, we’ve had community-driven parties celebrating global events (like Carnival), along with parties thrown simply for the joy of celebrating.

However, my favorite campus event remains the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It is part of Silwood culture that the teams who lose the pub quiz will organize the next one, and I can proudly state that I have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Even though I have lost many pub quizzes due to my poor general knowledge of trivia, there’s always a great time to be had with wonderful company and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never been dull or deficient. In addition to the variety of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inviting community made up of students from all corners of the globe. We all appreciate nature, value our beautiful campus grounds, and, above all,

Written by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation When most students at Imperial picture Silwood Park, they imagine a verdant, enigmatic campus abundant with wildlife and vegetation seldom found on our other campuses like South Kensington or White City.
