When the majority of Imperial students visualize Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, mysterious, and green campus filled with wildlife and plants rarely found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are right \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As an advocate of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I would like to showcase the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park functions as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and incorporating habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open meadows. A brief inquiry on iNaturalist, an application for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Furthermore, a search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus as of now.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is also the site of several long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, both of which are well-known studies conducted on the premises.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students focused on projects associated with ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us engage in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 taking care of the chickens raised behind our residences<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss interesting books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation endeavors for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also take part in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs that focus on sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), taking place either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and educational lessons, we host a variety of community-led events on campus. Silwood Park possesses its own student council that organizes and manages such activities, ensuring an energetic and engaging student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and we welcomed the Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, crafting dumplings and couplets to celebrate the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized festivities in honor of global events (like Carnival) or simply to celebrate the joy of gatherings.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus event, however, is the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the losing teams of the pub quiz must organize the next one, and I can proudly assert the highest number of pub quizzes arranged this year. Despite failing numerous pub quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there is always great fun with fantastic company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it is a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or deficient. In addition to many events and activities, we enjoy a warm and friendly community made up of students from around the globe. We all appreciate nature, value our beautiful campus grounds, and, most importantly, enjoy each other\u2019s presence. We\u2019re a close-knit community that relishes stargazing in the winter chill on the open field beside our bar, watching the birds and animals that visit our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
