When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a vibrant, intriguing, and verdant campus alive with wildlife and plant species seldom observed at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are right \u2013 every image of Silwood Park is spot on!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known community at Imperial, I want to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A brief overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park acts as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and hosting environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and open grassy areas. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations globally within a community of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while eBird has noted 111 bird species identified there to date.<\/p>\n

Curiously, Silwood Park is home to several long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the better-known studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly hosts postgraduate students with a focus on ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Many of us actively partake in various clubs located at Silwood Park. Prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss interesting reads<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation efforts for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As members of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in events of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    We also have informal clubs that participate in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club events and classes, we host numerous community-driven happenings on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and supports these activities to ensure a lively and engaging student experience! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone united to make dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also hosted community-arranged parties celebrating global occasions (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gatherings.<\/p>\n

    <pHowever, my favorite event on campus has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s a part of Silwood culture that the losing team of the pub quiz must set the next one, and I can proudly claim the most quizzes set this year. Despite losing numerous pub quizzes due to my poor general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment to be found with good company and a fine pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively buzz of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or lacking. In addition to the many events and activities, we foster a friendly and inclusive community made up of students from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, more significantly, each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that delights in stargazing during the chilly winter nights in the open field next to our pub, watching the birds and mammals that visit our window views, and spending moments with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
