When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a lush, enchanting, and green campus brimming with wildlife and plant life rarely found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In several ways, they are right\u2014every mental image of Silwood Park is indeed accurate!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I seek to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Presenting Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park functions as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats like freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick query on iNaturalist, an application designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide through an online community of naturalists, discloses that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, an investigation on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

More notably, Silwood Park hosts a variety of long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, two of the more famous studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly hosts postgraduate students engaged in projects concerning ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us participate in numerous clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tasked with the care of the chickens raised behind our residential halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss literature of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our communal garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation initiatives for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have sports clubs such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either at the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Beyond club activities and classes, we host a variety of community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and supports these events, fostering a lively and dynamic student life! Recently, we organized the Silwood language exchange, allowing our international community to exchange languages and cultures over several weeks and celebrated Chinese New Year with dumplings and couplets to mark the arrival of the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also held community-organized parties in honor of global celebrations (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of socializing.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, run by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that those who lose the quiz organize the next one, and I can proudly state that I hold the record for the highest number of quizzes organized this year. Despite often losing due to my lackluster general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment to be found in great company and a pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively bustle of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest town), life at Silwood Park never feels dull or insufficient. In addition to the diverse events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community of students from around the globe. We all appreciate nature, value our stunning campus grounds, and above all, enjoy each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that loves stargazing in the winter chill on the open field beside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and spending time with fellow nature aficionados.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I cook with my dear friend from India, who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
