When Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus brimming with extraordinary wildlife and flora, distinct from those at South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they are correct\u2014every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known Imperial community, I wish to shine a light on the student experience, pursuits, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Presenting Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and showcasing environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, a \u201chistoric\u201d forest, and open grasslands. A swift search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity discoveries worldwide, uncovers 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi recorded on campus. A check on eBird reveals 111 bird species tallied thus far.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is home to various long-standing field research initiatives, such as the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, both well-regarded projects conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students passionate about ecology, conservation, and evolution initiatives. We\u2019re involved in several clubs based at Silwood Park, including:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to chickens raised behind our residences<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 frequently discussing books that pique our interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation efforts for students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in clubs situated in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have sports groups like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my favorite!), held either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports halls in surrounding towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, we have a plethora of community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council, which organizes and supports activities to foster a lively student atmosphere! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our yearly Chinese New Year celebration, where we made dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also celebrated community-organized parties for global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of festivities.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus occasion is the weekly pub quiz, managed by our student community. It\u2019s a tradition at Silwood that pub quiz losers organize the next one, and I can proudly say I hold the record for the most quizzes set this year. Despite finishing poorly in many quizzes due to limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment with great company and a pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll to the nearest hustle and bustle (e.g., the train station and closest village), life at Silwood Park never comes off as dull or deficient. Alongside myriad events and activities, we have a friendly, inviting community of students from around the globe. We all share a love for nature, our stunning campus, and one another\u2019s company. We\u2019re a close community relishing stargazing in the winter chill on the open field near our bar, observing birds and mammals at our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I prepare meals with my dear friend from India who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. Friends living a short walk away in nearby halls often join us. After dinner, we typically engage in board games or watch films together. Residing on Silwood Park Campus epitomizes a serene, tranquil, idyllic lifestyle. In winter, this is complemented by the cozy warmth of heaters throughout our halls and campus buildings.<\/p>\n
