When Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a vibrant, enchanting, and green campus brimming with distinctive flora and fauna, setting it apart from other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct\u2014each depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known Imperial community, I wish to shine a light on the student life, events, and community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing environments like freshwater streams, ponds, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grassy areas. A search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been documented here.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park supports numerous long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project.<\/p>\n

Life as a Student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily serves postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. We are involved in various clubs hosted at Silwood Park, such as:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 caring for chickens that are raised behind our accommodations<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 engaging in discussions about interesting literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 tending to allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 planning nature walks and conservation events for students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also participate in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we take part in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (which happens to be my favorite!), either at the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities, the campus hosts numerous community-led events. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities to promote a lively student atmosphere. Recently, we organized the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, followed by our annual Chinese New Year celebration, where we crafted dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized parties to celebrate global events like Carnival or simply for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It’s a part of Silwood culture that the losing team from the quiz designs the next one, and I can proudly state that I hold the record for the most quizzes set this year. Despite my many losses owing to inadequate general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment in good company and a pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though we are a 30-minute stroll from civilization (e.g., the train station and nearest village), life at Silwood Park is far from dull. Alongside a plethora of events and activities, we share a warm and inviting community of students from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus, and, crucially, each other’s presence. We form a close-knit community that delights in stargazing during the cold winter nights in the open field next to our bar, observing birds and mammals visit our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I prepare meals with my dear friend from India, who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. We are frequently joined by friends residing just a minute’s walk away in nearby halls. After our meals, we typically enjoy board games or movies together. Life on Silwood Park Campus epitomizes a tranquil, serene, and picturesque existence. In winter, this is complemented by the warm embrace of<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
