When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a lush, enigmatic, and green campus brimming with wildlife and plant species that are rare on our other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are right \u2013 every vision of Silwood Park is spot on!<\/p>\n

As an ambassador of this lesser-known community at Imperial, I seek to showcase the student experience, activities, and community that thrive in our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Discovering Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park acts as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing environments like freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and open fields. A brief exploration on iNaturalist, a platform for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations with a global network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, a lookup on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

Even more fascinating, Silwood Park is home to a variety of extensive field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more prominent studies conducted here.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly hosts postgraduate students focused on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us are active members of various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for the upkeep of chickens reared behind our student accommodations<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly meets to discuss interesting reads from their chosen list<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 oversees the plots in our communal garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranges nature walks and conservation-themed activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the wider Imperial student community, many of us also engage in activities of clubs situated in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have groups that partake in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), played either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Aside from club activities and lessons, many community-driven events take place on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and manages such activities to promote a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community united to share languages and cultures over several weeks. We also welcomed the Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year by making dumplings and couplets to celebrate the arrival of the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also hosted community-organized gatherings celebrating international festivities (like Carnival) or just for the sheer joy of parties.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus, however, is the weekly pub quiz, orchestrated by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the losers of the pub quiz are responsible for setting up the next one, and I can proudly claim the highest number of pub quizzes organized this year. Despite my numerous losses in pub quizzes due to my lack of trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always plenty of fun to be had with great friends and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the vibrant buzz of civilization (for instance, the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed monotonous or dreary. In addition to various events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community made up of students from all corners of the globe. We all appreciate nature, treasure our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, enjoy each other\u2019s company. We are a tight-knit community that finds joy in stargazing during the winter chill on the<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
