In numerous respects, they are correct – every portrayal of Silwood Park rings true!

As a member of this lesser-known group at Imperial, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and culture at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

Welcome to Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and open meadows. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations within a global social network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while an additional look on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been spotted on campus to date.

Intriguingly, Silwood Park is also the location of numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more prominent studies conducted on-site.

Campus life at Silwood Park

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate scholars passionate about ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Many of us join several clubs based at Silwood Park. Some noteworthy examples include:

Chicken Club – which cares for the chickens raised behind our accommodation

Book Club – which meets regularly to review books of interest from their reading lists

Gardening Club – which tends to the plots in our community garden

Conservation Club – which arranges nature walks and conservation-based activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, a number of us are also members of and actively engage in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!

Casually, we also have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), taking place either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or within indoor sports facilities located in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.

Beyond club activities and classes, we enjoy various community-led events on campus. Silwood Park features its own student council, which organizes and facilitates these events to foster a lively and enjoyable student experience! In recent months, we’ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community united to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year event at the start of the year, during which everyone made dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve organized community parties to celebrate global events (such as Carnival) or gatherings simply for the joy of socializing.

However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. Within Silwood culture, those who lose the pub quiz must organize the next one, and I can proudly claim the title for the most pub quizzes set this year. Despite having lost many pub quizzes due to my limited knowledge of general trivia, there’s always plenty of enjoyment to be found in good company and a fine pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s situated a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or lacking. Alongside the myriad events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community composed of students from across the globe.
