When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus filled with wildlife and vegetation rarely found at other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are correct \u2013 every vision of Silwood Park is spot on!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known faction at Imperial, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park functions as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and showcasing ecosystems like freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A brief search on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity insights globally with a community of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Furthermore, an inquiry on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been cataloged on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Even more fascinating, Silwood Park is home to several long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, two of the more esteemed studies undertaken on-site.<\/p>\n

Life of students at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary research. Many of us participate in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens raised behind our dormitories<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly convening to discuss intriguing literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation-oriented events for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in and actively take part in the activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have clubs that partake in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we hold a plethora of community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and manages such events, ensuring a lively and engaging student life! In recent months, we\u2019ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community exchanged languages and cultures over a series of weeks. We also celebrated Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, making dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized celebrations for global festivities (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gatherings.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student body. It\u2019s part of Silwood tradition that the losers of the pub quiz are responsible for setting up the next one, and I can proudly assert that I hold the record for the highest number of pub quizzes organized this year. Despite my frequent losses due to a lack of general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment with wonderful company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the bustling centers of civilization (such as the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or devoid of excitement. Beyond the multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inclusive community consisting of students from across the globe. We all appreciate nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, the company of one another. We\u2019re a close-knit community that delights in stargazing during the winter chill on the open field alongside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
