In numerous aspects, they are correct – each depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.

Introducing Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. A brief inquiry on iNaturalist, an application for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide through an online network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. An additional check on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been noted on campus thus far.

More intriguingly, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more recognized studies conducted on-site.

Life as a student at Silwood Park

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution research. Most of us engage in several clubs affiliated with Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:

Chicken Club – tending to chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – meeting frequently to discuss fascinating reads

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – coordinating nature walks and conservation initiatives for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also take part in club activities located in South Kensington!

Additionally, we have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (which happens to be my personal favorite!), held either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot at indoor sports facilities.

Apart from club activities and classes, we have various community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these happenings to guarantee a lively and dynamic student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks. We also celebrated the start of the year with Chinese New Year, preparing dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also held community-organized parties to commemorate global events (like Carnival) or simply to enjoy a celebration.

My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It’s a Silwood tradition that the losers of the pub quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly state that I’ve set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite my frequent losses in the pub quizzes due to my inadequate general trivia knowledge, there’s always plenty of enjoyment with good friends and a fine pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my home away from home

Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from the bustling civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), living at Silwood Park has never felt monotonous or lacking. In addition to countless events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting student community from across the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, each other’s companionship. We’re a tight-knit community that relishes stargazing in the wintry air on the open field beside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our room windows, and spending quality time with fellow nature enthusiasts.

Most evenings

Composed by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet specializing in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When many Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they picture a rich, enigmatic, and verdant campus brimming with wildlife and plants that are rare at other locations such as South Kensington or White City.
