When the vast majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus alive with wildlife and vegetation that aren’t typically found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they’re spot on\u2014and every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice representing this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A glimpse into Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park is Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and showcasing environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expanses of grassland. A brief exploration on iNaturalist, an application designed for documenting and sharing biodiversity discoveries globally with an online community of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on our grounds. An additional check on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field studies, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the most prominent initiatives carried out here.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus predominantly accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us actively engage in various clubs located at Silwood Park. Some prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to chickens that are raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss intriguing literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the plots in our communal garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature hikes and conservation initiatives for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student network, many of us also join in activities from clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have groups involved in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby areas such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club engagements and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that plans and coordinates these activities, contributing to a lively and dynamic student life! Recently, we organized the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international student body exchanged languages and cultures over a few weeks, and we rang in the Chinese New Year with dumplings and couplets to embrace the lunar new year. We’ve also hosted community-driven celebrations to mark global occasions (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    My personal favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that those who lose the pub quiz are responsible for setting the next one, and I can proudly declare that I\u2019ve set the most quizzes this year. Despite frequently failing due to my scant general trivia knowledge, it\u2019s always a good time with great company and a cold pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from bustling civilization (e.g., the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or lacking. In addition to a variety of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inviting community of students from across the globe. We all appreciate nature, our stunning campus surroundings, and, more importantly, each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that relishes stargazing in the winter chill on the open field next to our pub, watching birds and mammals visit our window sills, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
