When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, intriguing, and verdant campus filled with fauna and flora that are seldom found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known faction at Imperial, I aim to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A glimpse into Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park is Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and showcasing environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations with a network of naturalists worldwide, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, eBird reveals that 111 species of birds have been documented on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is home to various long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, two prominent studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students pursuing projects in ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us belong to several clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy instances include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 looking after the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly engaging in discussions about interesting reads from their list<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 tending to the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation initiatives for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities organized by clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have groups involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either based on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we have numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park features its own student council that coordinates and facilitates these activities, ensuring an active and lively student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks. We also marked the annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, making dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Furthermore, we\u2019ve hosted community-organized celebrations for global events (such as Carnival) or simply for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus gathering, however, is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It is part of Silwood culture that the losing team of the pub quiz organizes the next one, and I can proudly say I\u2019ve set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite my countless losses in pub quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment with good company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my home away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively ambiance of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or unexciting. Alongside numerous events and activities, we enjoy a warm and inviting community of students from around the globe. We all share a love for nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, each other\u2019s companionship. We\u2019re a tight-knit group that relishes stargazing in the winter chill on the fields next to our bar, observing birds and mammals at our windows, and spending time with fellow nature admirers.<\/p>\n
