When students from Imperial recall Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, enigmatic, and green campus overflowing with distinctive wildlife and flora, distinctly different from the environments at South Kensington or White City. In several respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As an advocate of this lesser-known Imperial enclave, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and sense of community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A Glimpse of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open meadows. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations globally, uncovers 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi recorded on campus. A further inquiry on eBird indicates 111 bird species noted on-site thus far.<\/p>\n

More fascinatingly, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term research initiatives, with notable projects on-site including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project.<\/p>\n

Life as a Student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students focused on projects in ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are active in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some prominent examples are:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 caring for the chickens bred behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 having regular discussions about intriguing books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 maintaining the community garden plots<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature walks and conservation efforts for Silwood Park students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the larger Imperial student body, numerous members also partake in clubs situated in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we engage in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Beyond club activities and classes, we enjoy a variety of community-led events on campus. Silwood Park features its own student council responsible for organizing and facilitating activities to ensure a vibrant and engaging student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our diverse community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration, crafting dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. Additionally, we’ve had community-hosted parties to celebrate global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    One of my favorite events on campus is the weekly pub quiz, orchestrated by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood tradition that the quiz losers set up the next one, and I can proudly claim the highest number of quiz setups this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my inadequate general knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment in good company and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Although it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the bustling energy of civilization (such as the train station and nearest village), life at Silwood Park never feels dull or lacking. Aside from the numerous events and activities, we have a friendly, inclusive community of students from across the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus landscape, and, importantly, each other\u2019s companionship. We\u2019re a close-knit group enjoying winter stargazing in the chilly open field next to our bar, observing birds and mammals at our windows, and spending invaluable time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I cook with my dear friend from India, who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. We frequently have friends from nearby halls join us.
