When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a vibrant, enigmatic, and green campus filled with distinctive wildlife and vegetation, distinct from those at other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In numerous aspects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I\u2019d like to spotlight the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations with a global community of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. A further search on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been identified on campus to date.<\/p>\n

More intriguingly, Silwood Park is home to various long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, which are notable studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students focused on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us belong to several clubs based at Silwood Park. Prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 looking after the chickens kept behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss books of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 tending to the plots in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and manages such activities, promoting a vibrant and engaging student life! Recently, we\u2019ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone made dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also organized community parties celebrating global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood tradition that the teams losing the pub quiz set the next one, and I can proudly say I\u2019ve created the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite my repeated failure in many pub quizzes due to my limited general knowledge, there\u2019s always plenty of fun with great company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively surroundings of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or unexciting. Apart from various events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community of students from around the globe. We all share a passion for nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a close-knit community that enjoys stargazing in the winter chill on the open field beside our bar, watching birds and mammals at our room windows, and spending time<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
