In many respects, they are correct – and every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!

As a member of this lesser-known group at Imperial, I would like to showcase the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.

An overview of Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and open grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations with an online network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Additionally, a search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus thus far.

Even more fascinating, Silwood Park hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized studies conducted there.

Student experience at Silwood Park

The campus predominantly accommodates postgraduate students focused on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us engage in several clubs that are based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:

Chicken Club – which looks after the chickens that are raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – which frequently meets to discuss books of interest from their reading list

Gardening Club – which oversees the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – which organizes nature walks and conservation-related activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As a part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also get involved in clubs based in South Kensington!

Casually, we have clubs that engage in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (which happens to be my personal favorite!), either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports halls in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and coursework, we have numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and manages these events to guarantee a vibrant and engaging student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange where our largely international community united to share languages and cultures over several weeks. We also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, where everyone convened to create dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Furthermore, we’ve had community-organized parties celebrating global events (like Carnival), or parties held simply for the joy of gathering.

However, my favorite campus activity has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s part of Silwood culture that the team finishing last in the pub quiz is tasked with hosting the next one, and I can proudly claim the highest number of quizzes hosted this year. Despite my poor general trivia knowledge leading to many quiz losses, there’s always a great time to be had with delightful company and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the energetic buzz of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or insufficient. Alongside the multitude of events and activities, we are part of a warm and inviting community comprised of students from across the globe. We all share a love for nature, cherish our beautiful campus grounds, and more

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet specializing in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they conjure images of a verdant, enchanting campus overflowing with unique animals and plants that are rarely encountered at other campuses such as South Kensington or White City.
