When many students from Imperial picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus brimming with wildlife and vegetation not typically found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a spokesperson for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and community present at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations with a network of naturalists globally, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Additionally, a search on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been identified on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two renowned projects taking place on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students keen on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us are active in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Notable mentions include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 frequently discussing interesting literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation initiatives for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being part of the broader Imperial student body, numerous individuals also engage in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Besides club activities and lectures, we host a variety of community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities to maintain a lively and enjoyable student experience! In recent months, we\u2019ve engaged in the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks. We also honored Chinese New Year early in the year by making dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized gatherings celebrating global occasions (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of celebrating.<\/p>\n

    My favorite on-campus event is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student body. It\u2019s tradition at Silwood that those who lose the quiz prepare the next one, and I can proudly state that I\u2019ve set the most quizzes this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my inadequate general knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment with wonderful company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the bustling energy of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or deprived. Apart from various events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community of students from around the globe. We all share a love for nature, our stunning campus, and, more importantly, each other\u2019s companionship. We\u2019re a tight-knit group that delights in stargazing in the winter chill on the open field beside our bar, watching birds and mammals visit our windows, and spending time together with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I prepare meals with my dear friend from India, who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. We are often accompanied by<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
