In numerous respects, they’re correct – every depiction of Silwood Park is accurate!

As a member of this lesser-known faction at Imperial, I’d like to draw attention to the student life, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

An overview of Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and open fields. A brief exploration on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations globally within a network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been documented on campus, and further research on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been recorded to date.

Interestingly, Silwood Park also hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more prominent studies conducted on the grounds.

Student experiences at Silwood Park

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students who are passionate about projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us participate in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:

Chicken Club – who tend to the chickens raised behind our residences

Book Club – who convene regularly to discuss intriguing books

Gardening Club – who oversee the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – who arrange nature walks and conservation-focused activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the wider Imperial student community, many of us also engage in activities organized by clubs in South Kensington!

Casually, we also have groups involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my absolute favorite!), based either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports centers in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Alongside club pursuits and classes, numerous community-driven events take place on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these events, ensuring a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, allowing our predominantly international community to share languages and cultures over a few weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone gathered to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also enjoyed community-led celebrations honoring global events (like Carnival) or simply parties organized for the joy of celebration.

My favored event on campus, however, must be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s ingrained in Silwood culture that the quiz losers set up the next one, and I can confidently claim the highest number of pub quizzes organized this year. Despite frequently losing pub quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there’s always enjoyable moments to be had with great company and a refreshing pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or deficient. In addition to the myriad of events and activities, we boast a friendly and inviting community made up of students from across the globe. We share a collective appreciation for nature, our stunning campus landscape, and, most significantly, each other’s presence. We’re a tight-knit community that enjoys spending time together.

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus bustling with creatures and vegetation rarely found at other sites like South Kensington or White City.
