When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus brimming with wildlife and plant life not often found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every representation of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known community within Imperial, I\u2019d like to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A brief overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open fields. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations globally within a social network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Furthermore, a search on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been noted on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Silwood Park hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized studies conducted on the premises.<\/p>\n

Student experiences at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us belong to various clubs established at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 who tend to the chickens kept behind our halls of residence<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who frequently convene to discuss literature of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 who oversee the plots in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 who arrange nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities offered by clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we also have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either utilizing the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities located in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we have numerous community-driven events taking place on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates such gatherings to guarantee a lively and stimulating student life! In recent times, we\u2019ve held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community united to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the year’s start, where everyone collaborated to create dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also hosted community-organized parties to mark various global events (such as Carnival), or gatherings arranged simply out of love for celebrations.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event must be the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It has become part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers must host the next quiz, and I can proudly claim the most pub quizzes set this year. Despite failing many pub quizzes due to my weak general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment to be found with good friends and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my home away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the bustling atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt tedious or lacking. Along with the various events and activities, we have a warm and inviting community composed of students from around the globe. We all share a love for nature, cherish our beautiful campus grounds, and most importantly, enjoy each other’s company.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
