When the majority of Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus rich with wildlife and plants not typically found at our other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introduction to Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and showcasing environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open meadows. A simple inquiry on iNaturalist, an application where you can document and share biodiversity observations worldwide with an online community of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and a further search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been documented on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is also the location for several long-term field research initiatives, with projects such as the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more recognized studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus predominantly hosts postgraduate students engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us take part in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples are:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 dedicated to taking care of the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 which meets regularly to discuss intriguing reads on their list<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 responsible for the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 which organizes nature outings and conservation activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have groups participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Alongside club events and classes, we host numerous community-driven activities on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and supports these events to maintain a vibrant and exciting student life! Recently, we have enjoyed the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community convened to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also held our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, bringing everyone together to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We have additionally celebrated community-organized parties honoring global events (like Carnival) or parties purely for the sake of enjoyment.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event must be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It is a Silwood tradition that the quiz losers are responsible for setting the next one, and I can proudly state that I have the highest number of pub quizzes arranged this year. Despite my frequent losses due to poor general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always a great time to be had with good friends and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Although a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never been dull or lacking. Besides the many events and activities, we boast a warm and inviting community made up of students from various corners of the globe. All of us share a love for nature and take pride in our beautiful campus grounds,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
