In numerous respects, they are correct – every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!

As a spokesperson for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to shine a light on the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

Introducing Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats like freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and open meadows. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations globally, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and an additional check on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified on campus to date.

Notably, Silwood Park is also the location of numerous long-term field research endeavors, with Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized studies conducted on-site.

Student experiences at Silwood Park

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students focused on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are spread across various clubs situated at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:

Chicken Club – responsible for the care of chickens raised behind our residences

Book Club – meet regularly to discuss their chosen reading materials

Gardening Club – oversee the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – plan nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in clubs based in South Kensington!

In addition, we have informal clubs that participate in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports halls located in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and classes, we host various community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and manages such events to guarantee a lively and enjoyable student life! In recent months, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community came together to share languages and cultures over several weeks. We also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, where everyone collaborated to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the start of a new lunar year. Additionally, we’ve held community-organized parties celebrating events from all over the globe (such as Carnival), or parties held simply for the joy of celebration.

However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s ingrained in Silwood culture that the losing teams of the pub quiz must organize the next one, and I can proudly declare I have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite my repeated losses in pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there’s always ample enjoyment to be had with good company and a fine pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s situated a 30-minute walk from the lively buzz of civilization (e.g. the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. In addition to the countless events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, intriguing, and green campus bustling with wildlife and flora not typically found at other campuses like South Kensington or White City.
