In numerous respects, they are correct – each depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As a member of this less-publicized community at Imperial, I would like to shed light on the student lifestyle, events, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

An overview of Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. A straightforward search on iNaturalist, an application for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide among a network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and an additional search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been documented to date.

Notably, Silwood Park is also home to various long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, which are among the more recognized studies conducted here.

Life as a student at Silwood Park

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Many of us engage in several clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:

Chicken Club – responsible for the chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – which meets frequently to discuss books of mutual interest

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – which arranges nature walks and conservation-related activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also take part in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!

Casually, we have clubs that participate in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Alongside club activities and classes, we host many community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates such gatherings to promote a lively and engaging student experience! Recently, we celebrated the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community came together to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also held our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where participants made dumplings and couplets to welcome a new lunar year. We’ve also hosted community-led parties in honor of global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of celebration.

However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. A part of Silwood culture dictates that those who lose the pub quiz must set the next one, and I can proudly claim the highest number of pub quizzes arranged this year. Despite my frequent defeats due to lackluster general trivia knowledge, there’s always plenty of enjoyment to be had with great company and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from the lively energy of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or insufficient. In addition to countless events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community made up of students from across the globe. We all cherish nature, adore our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, enjoy each other’s presence. We’re a close-knit community that delights in stargazing during the chilly winter nights.

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus alive with flora and fauna rarely found at other places like South Kensington or White City.
