In many ways, they are spot on – every portrayal of Silwood Park is true!

As a voice for this lesser-known community within Imperial, I aim to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

Presenting Silwood Park

Silwood Park acts as Imperial’s outdoor research hub, covering 77 hectares and encompassing environments like freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and vast grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app dedicated to mapping and sharing global biodiversity observations within a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. A further exploration on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus thus far.

Even more fascinating, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term ecological research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more prominent studies conducted here.

Student Experience at Silwood Park

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate scholars focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us partake in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Notable examples comprise:

Chicken Club – tending to the chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – gathering regularly to discuss engaging literature

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments within our community garden

Conservation Club – arranging nature walks and conservation initiatives for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student population, many of us also engage in activities from clubs located in South Kensington!

Casually, we have clubs participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my favorite!), either at the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports venues in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Aside from club engagements and lessons, we host various community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates such activities, ensuring a lively and rewarding student experience! Recently, we’ve held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our yearly Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone gathered to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also enjoyed community-organized parties celebrating global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of festivities.

<p<My favorite campus event must be the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It’s part of Silwood culture that the losing team of the pub quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly claim to have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite failing numerous quizzes due to my limited general knowledge, there’s always a great time to be had with good friends and a fine pint of beer.

Silwood Park: My Sanctuary Away from Home

Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from the lively buzz of civilization (like the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed monotonous or inadequate. Beyond the multitude of events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community of students from across the globe. Our shared love for nature, our stunning campus surroundings, and, most importantly, each other’s companionship, foster a close-knit community that cherishes stargazing in the open field beside our bar during the chilly winter nights, observing the birds and mammals that grace

Written by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet specializing in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation When most Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a lush, enigmatic, and green campus alive with animals and plants not typically present at other locations like South Kensington or White City.
