When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a vibrant, enchanting, and verdant campus filled with wildlife and vegetation not typically found at our other locations like South Kensington or White City. In numerous aspects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 and every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known enclave at Imperial, I wish to shed light on the student experience, events, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A brief overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. An additional search on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been cataloged on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Silwood Park hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, which are among the more renowned studies conducted here.<\/p>\n

Campus life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus is primarily inhabited by postgraduate students focused on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are involved in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for the care of the chickens raised behind our student accommodations<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 convenes regularly to discuss interesting literature from their reading lists<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 oversees the allotments within our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizes nature walks and conservation-themed activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the wider Imperial student body, many of us are also members of and actively engage in clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we also have groups that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in the indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Alongside club activities and courses, we have numerous community-organized events occurring on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that plans and coordinates such initiatives, ensuring a lively and stimulating student atmosphere! In recent months, we’ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community gathered to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated the annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, crafting dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also had community-organized parties celebrating festivals from around the world (like Carnival), or simply parties thrown for the joy of festivity.<\/p>\n

    However, my most cherished campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student body. It’s part of the Silwood tradition that the team who loses the pub quiz must prepare the next one, and I can proudly assert that I’ve set the most pub quizzes this year. Despite my numerous losses due to my limited general knowledge, there’s always great enjoyment to be found with good friends and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s situated a 30-minute walk from the lively ambiance of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. In addition to the multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inviting community made up of students from across the globe.
