When many students from Imperial picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, enigmatic, and vibrant campus alive with wildlife and plant species that aren\u2019t commonly found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known group within Imperial, I wish to showcase the student experience, events, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A quick inquiry on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with a social network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and a further check on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted to date.<\/p>\n

Of particular interest, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project standing out as two noteworthy endeavors conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a Student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution studies. Many of us actively engage in various clubs located at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to chickens raised behind our residential halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly conversing about books of interest from our reading lists<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation events for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us are also involved in activities offered by clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    In an informal capacity, we have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (which happens to be my favorite!), held either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and lectures, our campus hosts a variety of community-driven events. Silwood Park possesses its own student council that organizes and supports such events, contributing to a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, allowing our largely international community to exchange languages and cultures over several weeks, and we celebrated Chinese New Year at the year’s start by making dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized celebrations for global festivities (like Carnival) or simply gatherings for the joy of socializing.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the losers of the pub quiz are responsible for organizing the next one, and I can proudly state that I\u2019ve set the highest number of quizzes this year. Although I\u2019ve lost many pub quizzes due to my lackluster general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment with wonderful company and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: A Home Away From Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively energy of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never been dull or unfulfilling. In addition to a wealth of events and activities, we boast a warm and inclusive community of students hailing from around the globe. We all share a love for nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a close-knit community that enjoys stargazing in the chilly winter evenings on the open field adjacent to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and spending time in the company of fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
