When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus alive with wildlife and plant life typically unseen at other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they\u2019re correct\u2014each representation of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As an advocate for this lesser-known community within Imperial, I aim to shine a light on the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick exploration on iNaturalist, an app for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations with a global network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. A further look on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been identified on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Silwood Park is the location for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more prominent studies carried out here.<\/p>\n

Campus life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly caters to postgraduate scholars fascinated by ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us are involved in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable ones include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 taking care of chickens raised behind our dormitories<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 engaging in discussions about intriguing books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 maintaining the gardens in our community allotment<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 planning nature walks and conservation events for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us also take part in activities organized by clubs in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club engagements and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and supports these activities to maintain a lively and engaging student life! In recent months, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, and our yearly Chinese New Year celebration at the year’s beginning, where everyone gathered to make dumplings and couplets to welcome a new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized gatherings celebrating global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of socializing.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite event on campus has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that the teams that lose the pub quiz are responsible for setting the next one, and I can proudly claim to have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Even though I\u2019ve lost many pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, it\u2019s always a great time with good friends and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Despite being a 30-minute stroll from the lively energy of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. Beyond the multitude of events and activities, we have a friendly and welcoming community composed of students from across the globe. We all hold a passion for nature, cherish our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, enjoy each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that loves stargazing in the winter chill on the open field beside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our campus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
