When the majority of Imperial students think about Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, enchanting, and green campus brimming with wildlife and plants seldom found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are right \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known cohort at Imperial, I\u2019d like to bring attention to student life, events, and the community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app for cataloging and sharing biodiversity findings globally with an online community of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and a further look at eBird shows that 111 bird species have been documented on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Silwood Park is home to many extensive field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more established projects taking place on-site.<\/p>\n

Life of students at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students keen on ecology, conservation, and evolution initiatives. Many of us take part in various clubs located at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens kept behind our residences<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 consistently meeting to converse about literature of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the plots in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature excursions and conservation-based activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As members of the larger Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities from clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have clubs partaking in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), hosted either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club functions and classes, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and manages such events to guarantee an engaging and dynamic student experience! In recent months, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the year’s start, where everyone united to prepare dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also organized community festivities celebrating global events (like Carnival) or parties simply for the joy of partying.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event must undoubtedly be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s a part of Silwood culture that the losers of the pub quiz are tasked with setting the next one, and I can proudly assert that I hold the record for the highest number of pub quizzes organized this year. Despite my frequent losses in pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there is always enjoyable times to be shared with good friends over a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it is a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed monotonous or insufficient. In addition to the multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a warm and inviting community composed of students from around the globe. We all cherish nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, relish each other\u2019s company. We form a close-knit community that delights in spending time stargazing in the chilly winter evenings on<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
