When many Imperial students contemplate Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus brimming with wildlife and flora not typically found at our other locations like South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every visualization of Silwood Park is spot on!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known community at Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app that allows users to map and share biodiversity observations globally within a social network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while an additional search on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been documented on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also the venue for several long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized studies carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students interested in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us belong to a variety of clubs based at Silwood Park. Some noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 which takes care of the chickens reared behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 which regularly convenes to discuss selections from their reading lists<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 which oversees the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 which arranges nature walks and conservation-focused activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in activities organized by clubs in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have clubs involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports venues in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, there are numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these events to maintain a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community gathered to share languages and cultures over a few weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone came together to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Additionally, we\u2019ve hosted community-organized parties celebrating global events (such as Carnival) or parties simply for the joy of celebration.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus event, however, must be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers are tasked with organizing the next one, and I can proudly declare that I\u2019ve set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment to be found in the company of good friends and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s situated a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never been dull or insufficient. Along with various events and activities, we boast a friendly and inclusive community consisting of students from around the globe.
