When the majority of Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus abundant with wildlife and plants rarely found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every conception of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I aim to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A glimpse of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and home to ecosystems including freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations globally within an online community of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Additionally, eBird has documented 111 bird species present on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is also the venue for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the most notable studies conducted here.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Most of us are engaged in various clubs based in Silwood Park. Prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 looking after the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss intriguing literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation-focused activities for Silwood Park students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also get involved in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), based at either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we enjoy several community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that plans and facilitates these activities, guaranteeing a lively and engaging student life! In recent months, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and we welcomed the Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, making dumplings and couplets to celebrate the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also had community-organized parties celebrating global events (like Carnival) or gatherings simply for the joy of celebrating.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the losing team of the pub quiz must arrange the next one, and I can proudly claim the highest number of pub quizzes organized this year. Even though I\u2019ve lost numerous pub quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there’s always great fun with good company and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively ambiance of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or insufficient. Alongside the multitude of events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community of students from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus, and, even more so, each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that enjoys stargazing in the chilly winter on the open field beside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
