In several respects, they are correct – every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As an advocate for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

Introducing Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, spanning 77 hectares and featuring habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and open grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, a platform for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations globally within an online social network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and an additional search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been documented so far.

Notably, Silwood Park hosts many long-term field research projects, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more recognized projects conducted in the area.

Life as a student at Silwood Park

The campus predominantly accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Most of us belong to several clubs based at Silwood Park. Key examples include:

Chicken Club – responsible for the care of the chickens kept behind our residence halls

Book Club – who meet regularly to engage in discussions about books on their reading list

Gardening Club – who oversee the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – who arrange nature walks and conservation-based events for students at Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also take part in activities from clubs based in South Kensington!

Informally, we have clubs that are active in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities located in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and classes, numerous community-led events take place on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that plans and facilitates such events to ensure a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, allowing our largely international community to come together and share languages and cultures over several weeks, alongside our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone joined in to create dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also seen community-organized parties celebrating events from around the globe (like Carnival), or just parties for the joy of celebration.

However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It’s a tradition at Silwood that the quiz losers must organize the next quiz, and I can proudly claim the title for setting the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite frequently losing the pub quiz due to my limited knowledge of general trivia, there’s always an enjoyable time to be had with great company and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or deficient. In addition to the myriad of events and activities, we foster a warm and inviting community made up of students from across the globe.
