When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, enigmatic, and green setting brimming with wildlife and plants rarely encountered at other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known community at Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A brief overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide through a social network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and an additional search on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been noted to date.<\/p>\n

More intriguingly, Silwood Park is also the venue for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more recognized studies carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us are involved in various clubs situated at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for the care of the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who convene regularly to discuss books of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 who tend to the allotments within our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 who arrange nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in the activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Additionally, we have informal clubs that partake in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), based either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports halls located in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park possesses its own student council that organizes and coordinates such events, ensuring we enjoy a lively and engaging student life! In recent months, we\u2019ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community united to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, where everyone prepared dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also hosted community-organized parties celebrating global events (such as Carnival), or parties simply for the joy of celebration.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event must be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the losers of the pub quiz are responsible for setting the next one, and I can proudly boast the highest number of pub quizzes arranged this year. Despite often losing pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there’s always ample fun to be had with good company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Although it’s only a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. In addition to the many events and activities, we boast a friendly and inviting community made up of students from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and more importantly, relish each other\u2019s company.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
